Freshwater East

(Image from visitpembrokeshire.com [menu option “Explore”])
Fresh East, is a popular local Family Friendly Beach that has plenty of space.

It faces South East, so no prevailing westerly winds and rarely has big waves.
Leading from the road, there is a wide flat concrete path, which has a toilet block, leads to the soft sand, which is obviously difficult for wheelchair access.
The beach has a stream leading onto it which runs down to the sea. The left section of the beach is about 700m wide and the right section, accessed over small wooden bridge, is about 200m wide.
Many families on holiday in South Pembrokeshire, who attend Westgate for Sunday Services, stay in the chalets at Freshwater East. Phone signals at the beach are poor!

The Google Maps directions shown, provide the two ways of arriving at the beach. The main, dark blue, route is far easier (unless you enjoy driving down winding narrow country lanes and being prepared to reverse in order to find a passing bay!).
The starting point of the directions is Westgate Evangelical Chapel Pembroke.
The destination on the map is the entrance into the first of two carparks, the second is restricted to disability badges.
Post Code for Freshwater East Car Park is SA71 5LJ

Barafundle Bay

(Image from visitpembrokeshire.com [menu option “Explore”])

Barafundle Bay is a fabulous beach, however, due to its isolated access it is rarely, if ever, to be considered packed! It is often rated as one of the best beaches in the UK and is often placed on international lists of beaches to visit.
It is a bit of a hike to get there, has no amenities, so large backpacks are needed. The view during the walk over the cliff tops is excellent. DO NOT let children run towards the edge, there is a BIG drop onto rocks. Perfectly safe if you keep to the paths.
It faces South East, so no prevailing westerly winds and rarely has big waves.
The beach has soft sand and is VERY CLEAN, as is the water. It is about 250m wide.

The Google Maps directions shown, provide the the main, dark blue route.
The starting point of the directions is Westgate Evangelical Chapel Pembroke.
The destination on the map is the entrance into Stackpole Quay Car Park.
From there to the beach you will have to negotiate a hill climb, a cliff top walk and a descending path down to the beach. All safe and very pleasant. (Keep to the paths)

Broad Haven South

Broad Haven South, is a favourite beach.
It is amazing. Beautiful sand and dunes. This beach also faces South East so no BIG waves.
Never feeling packed even if a load of people are on the beach.
The last half mile or so is down a fairly narrow road, skirting a farmyard and then parking on the top of the headland in a National Trust Car Park. There are toilets available.
HOWEVER, there is a fairly long, steep path to negtiate whilst walking down to the beach. Children love, Grand Parents not so much. But worth every step if you can do it.
The beach has soft sand and is VERY CLEAN, as is the water. It is about 350m wide.
(As an aside. If you visit the Bosherston Lily Ponds and do the full walk to the end (about 1 mile) you end up on the back edge of the Beach! A real treat.)

Freshwater West

Freshwater West, is an all time favourite Beach, Spring, Summer. Autumn and Winter. It doesn’t matter how often you go down there, you will never be alone!! So it seams!
It is rugged, West South West Facing catching all the wind for BIG waves. It has lovely sand dunes and only ONE building – a necessary toilet block!
Never feeling packed even if a load of people are on the beach.
The beach has a band of large pebbles/ stones at the top edge and very clean sand and water (which come straight off the wild atlantic ocean.
SWIMMING IS VERY DANGEROUS. Surfers, of course totally ignore the warnings of under currents.
The beach is about 1200m wide.

The Second and Third route come in from the south to get the best view.
Both of these routes a fairly good roads, easily taking 2 way traffic.
The rout through Axton Hill is simply a country road
The route from Maiden Wells is more interesting.
There is hardly any difference is distance or time (roughly 8 miles)

Manorbier Beach

Manorbier Beach is very pleasant
It is nice sandy beach that has rock to the sides. Due to it being South West facing there is often a swell or large wave.
Surfers are often there, however it is dangerous, one surfer died recently whilst surfing over the underlying rock area. There are also some strong currents, so although it is a lovely beach there are strong tidal currents..

NOTE:

At the moment I am trying to solve an inconsistency with the number of beach options that are displayed. I have changed the method initially used which seems to have sorted it. BUT, I have noticed, mainly on mobile phones that sometimes one or two options occasionally fail to be displayed. Still working on it!
